Biography
Originally from Central Florida, Cory Benjamin is a Los Angeles based singer focusing on standards and ballads from the Great American Songbook, which have survived the test of time and continue to uphold their significance in the music industry. Always striving for a fresh interpretation of material, Cory brings all of his experiences and Life's lessons along with a touch of contemporary vocal style, melding individuality with yesterday and today. It is soulful singing that underlies every opportunity Cory takes to share his gift.
Music in Cory's life has been inescapable, dating back to when he was only four years old and began his first piano lesson. Taking one step at a time, piano continued for six years (including what his five-year-old self considered to be the concert of a lifetime - tickling the ivories with the theme song to Star Wars); three years of violin and one year of cello followed before embarking on a journey that would evolve into his most important instrument: his voice. Cory has been singing for nineteen years, a journey that has grown to be an all encompassing means of expression - shared to entertain, and at its core, stir souls. It is the heart of contemporary American music, the Great American Songbook, which resonates with Cory, drawing in colors of jazz and blues to round out the experience both musically and emotionally.
Cory's musical influences are broad, ranging from Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Tony Bennett, Norah Jones, Amos Lee, Big Joe Turner, and Madeleine Peyroux to Carol King, James Taylor, The Carpenters, Emmylou Harris, Iris Dement, John Mayer, Nick Drake, Paolo Nutini, Moby, and Morrissey. Cory has an affinity for singers who bring Life to the table and are able to share their unique voice and stories through song.
